Biography
In 2021, the Hon. Shalina D. Kumar became the first person of South Asian descent to be nominated for a federal judgeship in Michigan. She was sworn in as a U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan in December of 2021. Judge Kumar was appointed to the Oakland County Circuit Court in 2007. She was appointed as Chief Judge by the Michigan Supreme Court in 2018 and was reappointed in 2020. Prior to taking the bench, she was a civil litigator in private practice from 1997 to 2007. Judge Kumar is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Federal Bar Association, the Oakland County Bar Association, and the South Asian Bar Association.
