Biography

On March 9, 2023, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. appointed Judge Jonathan J.C. Grey to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Prior to his appointment, he served as a United States Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of Michigan.

Judge Grey primarily grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and has lived in Detroit for several years. He is a graduate of Morehouse College and Georgetown University Law Center. After law school, he practiced labor and employment law at Seyfarth Shaw LLP in Chicago. He served as a law clerk to the Honorable W. Louis Sands in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia and the late Honorable Damon J. Keith in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

As an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Ohio and the Eastern District of Michigan, he led diversity programs and anti-domestic violence initiatives. He also prosecuted illegal firearms, fraud, and international narcotics offenses. Judge Grey is an avid mentor to students from middle school to graduate school and diverse attorneys. He is a member of the Federal Bar Association and the Wolverine Bar Association.
