Biography

Kimberly G. Altman was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan on September 16, 2020. She received a Bachelor of Arts, with high honor, from James Madison College at Michigan State University in 1992 and a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from Wayne State University Law School in 1995.

After law school, she has served in a variety of positions in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, including Law Clerk to the Hon. Robert E. DeMascio, Staff Attorney, and Career Law Clerk to the Hon. Avern Cohn.

Judge Altman is a past president of the Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and served as an officer and board member of the Chapter for many years, including as Co-Editor of the Chapter’s Newsletter. She is also a past member of the Governmental Relations Committee and the Chapter Activity Fund Committee for the National Federal Bar Association.

Judge Altman currently serves as a Trustee of the Court Historical Society for the Eastern District of Michigan. Additionally, she is the referral judge for the Court’s pro se prisoner civil rights mediation program and Chair of the Court’s Magistrate Judge’s Committee. She also participates in the American Inn of Court program at the University of Detroit Mercy Law School.
