Cellular Phones and Other Communication Devices

General Policy:

Cellular phones and any other device with wireless communication capabilities, are not permitted in federal court facilities within the Eastern District of Michigan.

Attorneys:

Attorneys appearing in connection with any judicial proceeding or presenting evidence of bar membership may bring a phone (cellular phone and any other device with wireless communication capabilities) into a federal court facility.

Attorneys bringing phones into a federal court facility should be aware of the provisions of E.D. Mich. LR 83.31(f) and the consequences of violating the local rule.

District judges located in a court facility away from the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit may make appropriate orders regulating the possession and use of phones in the buildings in which he or she presides. A summary for each court facility follows:

Detroit - Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse:

The following attorney conference rooms have been designated for attorney cellphone use:

Rooms 117, 218, 705, 864, 1039, and 1041

Ann Arbor - Federal Building:

Attorneys may use cellular phones in the lobby only.

Bay City - U.S. Post Office Building:

Attorneys may use cellular phones in the following locations:

  • Corridor outside the second floor courtroom from the Court Security Officers’ station to the east windows
  • Attorney conference room - Room 210
  • Third floor north elevator lobby

Attorneys may use cellular phones in the following locations:

  • Room 103 - Attorney Conference Room located on the first floor
  • Room G-25 - Vending Room located in the basement

Port Huron - Federal Building:

Cellular telephones, PDA's, Palm Pilots, BlackBerrys, etc. are not permitted in the Port Huron court facility.
