Biography

Victoria A. Roberts was commissioned by President William Jefferson Clinton on June 26, l998 to serve as a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan, with the unanimous advice and consent of the United States Senate. Prior to that, Judge Roberts was in private practice. She also served as a court appointed special master and arbitrator in pending litigation matters.

Judge Roberts was the 62nd president of the State Bar of Michigan and the first black female to hold that position. Her term expired in September 1997, the same year she was named one of the Lawyers of the Year by the Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

Judge Roberts was the managing partner of the Detroit law firm of Goodman, Eden, Millender & Bedrosian until its dissolution in February, l998. She began her employment there in 1988.

At Goodman, Eden, Millender & Bedrosian, Judge Roberts' primary areas of practice were plaintiffs' personal injury cases, with an emphasis on general negligence, product liability, housing discrimination and medical malpractice.

She has also served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan.

Judge Roberts received her Juris Doctor degree in 1976 from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston. Her undergraduate degree, in journalism and sociology, is from the University of Michigan. A native of Detroit, she was Valedictorian of her class at St. Martin de Porres High School, class of 1969.

Following his 1993 election, Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer selected Judge Roberts as General Counsel for his transition team. Not only did Judge Roberts provide legal advice personally for the transition team, she coordinated the efforts of 12 law firms which provided voluntary legal services to the team.

An author, teacher and lecturer, Judge Roberts has served as a faculty member for the Institute for Continuing Legal Education and the Trial Advocacy Workshop of the United States District Court - Eastern District of Michigan. She has also served as a mediator for Wayne County Circuit Court and as a member of the Attorney Discipline Board's Wayne County Hearing Panel. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the two highest conferred by the State Bar of Michigan: The Roberts P. Hudson Award and the Champion of Justice Award.

Prior to her appointment, Judge Roberts provided legal services on a pro bono basis to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization, and served on its Board of Directors. She is a past chair of the Board of Directors of the Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit.
