Letters of Support/Character Letters |
Letters submitted by counsel in support of clients in criminal cases (often referred to as “letters of support” or “character letters”) should be personally written by the individual who signs the letter. If AI is used to write such a letter, it is possible that the letter will not appear to be as sincere and will not convey the heart-felt statements and experiences of family members and friends that are most helpful to the Court in learning about the defendant at sentencing. Letters fully generated by AI may not be given the same weight as letters authored by an individual. Handwritten and typed letters are both equally acceptable.
