Information For Attorneys

Admission to the Eastern District of Michigan Bar

Attorney admission is governed by E.D. Mich. LR 83.20. Attorneys wishing to practice in the Eastern District of Michigan must:

  1. Submit the Application for Admission fee to the Clerk's Office.
  2. Return the completed Application for Admission to the Clerk's Office in which you anticipate being sworn-in.
    • Once this step is complete, an attorney may file documents in the Court. However, before filing documents, attorneys must register for electronic filing and complete the required training.
  3. Appear before a District, Bankruptcy or Magistrate Judge to be sworn in. The attorney must have a sponsor who is a member in good standing of our Court bar. The sponsor must be in attendance at the swearing-in.

Attorneys must be sworn in before appearing before a District, Bankruptcy or Magistrate Judge. The swearing-in can be performed in conjunction with the first appearance.

Civility Principles

When completing the Application for Admission, attorneys must swear (or affirm) that they will abide by the civility principles approved by the Court.

Mass Swearing-In Ceremonies

Every December the Court holds a mass swearing-in ceremony. Although held primarily for attorneys who recently passed the bar, it is open to any attorney not admitted to practice in the Eastern District of Michigan. Once the ceremony has been scheduled, a notice will be posted in the NEWS area of the Court's website.

Electronic Evidence Presentation Systems

An advanced technology courtroom allows the judge, attorneys, jury, and spectators the ability to not only hear the testimony, but to see the evidence through electronic presentation.
